Valentina Shevchenko is widely regarded as one of the most decorated athletes in Kyrgyzstan's history. Her formidable reputation in combat sports is well-established, boasting an impressive record of 11 world championships in Muay Thai, alongside three titles in kickboxing and K-1 disciplines.

Within the UFC octagon, Valentina has twice ascended to the flyweight championship, marking a historic first for Kyrgyzstan. As of June 2025, she commands the premier position in the UFC's pound-for-pound rankings, a testament to her unparalleled talent and undisputed supremacy in the global landscape of mixed martial arts.

Early Life and the Dawn of a Sporting Career

Born on March 7, 1988, in Frunze (now Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan), Valentina found her earliest inspiration in her mother, Elena Shevchenko. Elena, a master of sports and the president of Kyrgyzstan's Thai Boxing Federation, instilled a profound passion for martial arts in Valentina, a path also embraced by her older sister, Antonina Shevchenko.

Valentina commenced her training at the tender age of five, initially focusing on taekwondo before transitioning to Muay Thai and kickboxing. Throughout her teenage years, her exceptional speed, precision, and dedication set her apart. Her long-time coach, Pavel Fedotov, who has been a constant presence throughout her professional journey, quickly recognized her extraordinary potential.

Illustrious Career in Kickboxing and Muay Thai

Her tenure in these striking sports was nothing short of remarkable: between 2003 and 2015, Valentina amassed over 90 victories in both amateur and professional bouts, featuring eight technical knockouts and two definitive knockouts. Her initial defeat in kickboxing occurred in 2008 against Debbie Urquhart (WFCA), followed by losses to Bai Ling in 2010 and Kong Wang in 2015.

Over this period, Shevchenko secured eight gold medals at the IFMA World Championships (in 2003, 2006–2010, 2012, and 2014) and clinched victory at the IMFA Royal World Cup in 2015. Notably, during these competitions, she defeated future UFC flyweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk on three separate occasions. These accomplishments firmly establish Shevchenko as one of the most dominant female figures in the annals of Thai boxing.

Transition to Mixed Martial Arts: The Path to the UFC

Shevchenko launched her professional MMA career at just 15 years old, debuting on April 21, 2003, at the Kyrgyz Federation Kulatuu tournament against Eliza Aidaralieva. The bout concluded with her securing a technical knockout victory in the second round.

Following this, she achieved six consecutive early victories, all by first-round knockout, across regional promotions in Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and South Korea. In 2006, Shevchenko temporarily paused her MMA career to concentrate on Thai boxing and kickboxing.

Upon returning to combat sports in 2010, Shevchenko made her debut in the United States at the C3 Fights tournament in Oklahoma, facing future UFC title challenger Liz Carmouche. Although Shevchenko largely controlled the first round, the fight was controversially halted by a doctor due to an injury stemming from an illegal strike. As the referee did not penalize Carmouche, she was awarded the victory via technical knockout. Subsequently, Shevchenko took another hiatus from MMA, during which she continued to compete in amateur Thai boxing.

In 2013, competing under the banner of the South American organization MMA Fusion FC, Shevchenko secured two consecutive victories by technical knockout within a two-month span. A year later, she inked a deal with Legacy FC, where on February 27, 2015, at Legacy Fighting Championship 39, she decisively defeated Jen Finney via unanimous decision (30–27, 30–27, 30–27), further propelling her ascent in professional MMA.
